Jane de Florez trained at Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has been teaching for over 25 years.  She has always taught Voice, Public Speaking alongside her professional acting and singing career.

Jane bases her work in solid technique for Voice and Speech, creating confidence and vocal empowerment, which leads to more expressive communication and greater attention from listeners.  Speech remodelling and accent reduction is also an area which can be worked on through guided exercises.

The Voice and Speech

 

I use various oral, vowel and consonantal exercises, which I tailor to your particular needs.  We also work on texts and dialogue, which will help you to practice speaking out loud in a safe space.

 

I work with people with all sorts of accents, from all over the world and from different regions of the UK.  For some, English is their first language, and for others, a foreign language.  

 

I try to make the lessons fun and highly relevant to each person.  We record the exercises on your smartphone and I also give you a printout of the work we have done, so that everything is clear for practice.

​The Sensitive Topic of Received Pronounciation

 

Today's name for Received Pronounciation (RP) is Standard English. This means that one speaks the consonants and vowels of English without the discernible stress or changes that indicate a regional or foreign accent.  Standard English should not be confused with so-called "posh" speaking, but is similar to speakers you hear on the BBC.

Standard English nowadays often includes a slight regional or national accent, which I find attractive. We don't all want to sound the same! Clarity and communication are always the most important elements of speech.

​

Our speech and how we hear ourselves can be a sensitive subject.  A Tutor should be sympathetic, understanding, and should be able to change their own accent.

​

Learning to speak Standard English can be beneficial for business purposes, or for actors and broadcasters from other English-speaking countries.
